A Guide to Organic Japanese Matcha Tea

At Inglewood Coffee Roasters, we have sourced the best quality, ceremonial grade, stoneground, organic matcha. Let us take you on a journey into the rich tradition, flavour, and health benefits of this iconic Japanese green tea. This fine powder provides a concentrated source of antioxidants, vitamins, and calming amino acids and presents a smooth, earthy taste.

With its vibrant green colour, matcha is cherished in Japanese tea ceremonies and is now a global favourite, used in lattes, smoothies, and desserts.

Matcha is unique in its origins, preparation methods, varieties, and wellness perks; so, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned tea lover, you can find several ways to enjoy and incorporate this green tea into your lifestyle.

What is Matcha?

Japanese matcha tea is a finely ground powder originating in Japan, made from specially grown tea leaves. For centuries, it has been valued by the Japanese, particularly in their traditional tea ceremonies.

Unlike regular green tea, where leaves are steeped and removed, the whole matcha tea leaf is consumed in powdered form, giving a stronger flavour, richer colour, and offering a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Matcha is commonly known for its vibrant green colour and smooth, slightly earthy flavour, and is popular amongst health-conscious consumers who tap into its natural caffeine and L-theanine content to boost energy.

The Many Uses of Matcha

Matcha has become incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways. Moving far beyond the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, organic green matcha is now incorporated within a number of modern recipes:

  • Tea & Lattes: The most common use is whisked with hot water or blended with milk for a frothy tea or creamy matcha latte.
  • Smoothies, Juices & Iced Drinks: Added for flavour, colour, and a natural energy boost.
  • Baking: Used in cakes, cookies, muffins, and breads for an intense green hue and earthy taste.
  • Desserts: Popular in ice creams, puddings, macarons, and cheesecakes.
  • Culinary Dishes: Can be sprinkled into noodles, sauces, or savoury seasonings to boost colour and taste.
  • Skincare: Infused in masks, scrubs, and creams where its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds help soothe skin and combat signs of aging.

Product Information

The Matcha Mindset (Key Benefits)

Sustained Energy Without the CrashUnlike the quick spike of traditional espresso, stone-ground green tea delivers a smooth, steady wave of clean energy.

  • Jitter-Free Focus: High concentrations of L-Theanine (a rare amino acid) work synergistically with natural caffeine to calm the central nervous system while stimulating alpha brain waves. The result? Enhanced focus and mental clarity without the coffee jitters.
  • Metabolic & Antioxidant Powerhouse: Packed with EGCg (epigallocatechin gallate), a single serving of stone-ground matcha contains up to 137 times more antioxidants than standard steeped green tea, supporting metabolism and cellular recovery.
  • Radiant Skin & Immunity: Rich in Chlorophyll and Vitamin C, our organic matcha serves as a natural detoxifier that protects the body against environmental stressors.
Cultivation & Craftsmanship (The Details)

Authentic Japanese HeritageWe've partnered with the experts at Matcha Maiden, who treat their matcha with the exact same single-origin reverence we bring to our specialty coffee beans.

  • The Origin: 100% Certified Organic Tencha leaves shade-grown in the nutrient-dense volcanic soils of Kagoshima, Japan.
  • The Harvest: Exclusively shade-grown for 3-4 weeks prior to harvest to force the plant to pump maximum chlorophyll, amino acids, and a deep, vibrant green hue into the leaves.
  • The Process: Thoroughly de-veined, de-stemmed, and traditional stone-ground (or bead-milled) into an ultra-fine, silky micro-powder that dissolves flawlessly into water or milk.
  • Tasting Profile: Creamy, sweet vegetal body, balanced umami depth, and a completely smooth finish with zero residual bitterness.
How to Prepare (Ceremonial vs. Latte)

Whisking the Flawless Cup

  • For a Traditional Usucha (Thin Tea): Sift 1/2 tsp (1-2g) of matcha powder into a bowl. Add 70mL of hot water (70°C–80°C—never boiling). Using your Inglewood Bamboo Whisk, zig-zag briskly in an 'M' or 'W' motion until a thick, frothy jade layer forms.
  • For the Ultimate Matcha Latte: Whisk your matcha shot with 50mL of hot water until smooth, then pour directly over 150mL of hot, textured oat, almond, or dairy milk. (Try it with our Strawberry or Vanilla blends for an elevated cafe experience).
