What is Matcha?
Japanese matcha tea is a finely ground powder originating in Japan, made from specially grown tea leaves. For centuries, it has been valued by the Japanese, particularly in their traditional tea ceremonies.
Unlike regular green tea, where leaves are steeped and removed, the whole matcha tea leaf is consumed in powdered form, giving a stronger flavour, richer colour, and offering a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
Matcha is commonly known for its vibrant green colour and smooth, slightly earthy flavour, and is popular amongst health-conscious consumers who tap into its natural caffeine and L-theanine content to boost energy.
The Many Uses of Matcha
Matcha has become incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways. Moving far beyond the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, organic green matcha is now incorporated within a number of modern recipes:
- Tea & Lattes: The most common use is whisked with hot water or blended with milk for a frothy tea or creamy matcha latte.
- Smoothies, Juices & Iced Drinks: Added for flavour, colour, and a natural energy boost.
- Baking: Used in cakes, cookies, muffins, and breads for an intense green hue and earthy taste.
- Desserts: Popular in ice creams, puddings, macarons, and cheesecakes.
- Culinary Dishes: Can be sprinkled into noodles, sauces, or savoury seasonings to boost colour and taste.
- Skincare: Infused in masks, scrubs, and creams where its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds help soothe skin and combat signs of aging.
