Short for decaffeinated coffee, decaf coffee has had most of its caffeine removed yet still retains the rich flavour and aroma coffee lovers enjoy, making it a popular alternative for those who love the taste of coffee but want to avoid the stimulating effects of caffeine, or simply wish to limit their caffeine intake.

Through special processes and modern techniques, ground decaf coffee now tastes closer than ever to regular coffee.

Yes, it Does Contain Caffeine

Contrary to popular belief, decaf coffee is not caffeine free. The decaffeination processes, such as the Swiss Water Process or EA Water Process, eliminate about 97% or more of the caffeine, leaving behind small traces. On average, an 8oz (240 ml) cup of decaf coffee typically contains 2 to 5 milligrams of caffeine, compared to about 70 to 140 milligrams in a regular cup of coffee.

Most people won’t be affected by this tiny amount of caffeine, but if you’re highly sensitive to it, it’s advised to keep this in mind.

How Decaf Coffee Beans are Made

Decaf beans are the result of the removal of most of the caffeine from unroasted green coffee beans. 97% or more of the caffeine is extracted while the flavour compounds are kept intact. There is more than one method used, but they all provide the same result:

  • Swiss Water Process: This method uses hot water and carbon filters to gently extract caffeine without the use of chemicals and while maintaining all of the coffees natural flavour.
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Method: Pressurised CO₂ is used to locate and remove caffeine while conserving the taste.
  • Solvent-Based Methods: A process that uses food-safe, plant-based, natural solvents. Ethyl acetate (EA), which is a by-product of sugarcane processing, gently dissolves the caffeine while keeping all of the coffee's natural flavour. The coffee is then dried back to its original moisture content removing all of the residual solvent.

Once the decaffeination process is complete, the beans are dried and shipped to us where they are roasted on site at Inglewood Coffee Roasters, just like regular coffee.
